What is a Virtual Meter?
Patented ICIS Virtual Metering Technology is the use of existing Automation and Process Control data to create a new energy metering device in the field where currently none exists.

In its simplest form a Virtual Meter can be considered as the conversion of a devices control characteristics into an Energy Consumption value in real-time using the design characteristics of the device.

For Example: Consider a simple pump and valve arrangement:

The Automation System controls the pump to a speed and the valves position.

Using motor and valve characteristics such as rated power, speed, KV factors with the control system signals from the Automation system such as Run Speed or Percentage Open, ICIS technology builds the motors real-time power consumption and flow through the valves.

Without the need of adding a new Physical Power or Flow meter ICIS can map the energy usage of devices Virtually and allow a user to build a complete understanding of energy flow throughout their site.

With this method of leveraging the Automation systems control data ICIS enables the building of Virtual Energy maps for a facility without the need for any new metering hardware or downtime.

Virtual meters can be built for any energy (WAGES) type and incorporate EPIs and complex calculations to offer users' accurate result sets and data displays. Utilised in conjunction with existing meters, users have the ability to compare the real downstream users and devices of an energy source from a top level meter through the use of our unique building and equipment energy map architecture.

Not only can users build maps of energy flow, but they also begin to build up equipment and unit profiles and start to map energy use/cost to batch and product runs.

For example consider the following Pasteurisation System:

Virtual meters can be built for Power, Thermal Energy, Heating and Cooling systems allowing for the building of the unit as an energy consuming device that can be reported on and compared to against other units of the same type.
